Michigan Wildflowers – Check out some spring flora near Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. We'll probably walk the Mission Creek trail (about a mile) to see a marsh marigold "garden" and look for fiddleheads, and drive to Dunbar forest to look for bloodroot, wild leeks, etc. Wear sturdy footwear and bring a lunch.

Raco Burn Tour – Visit the site of the Raco Burn forest fire of June 2007. Look for black-backed woodpeckers and mushrooms. No guarantees of finding these but something of interest should be found. About 25 miles to the site. Bug Season! Bring lunch.

St.Ignace Shore – Join Chuck & Ev for an early evening walk along the St. Ignace Shore to check for spring birds and plants, followed by a strawberry treat at the Big Boy Festival.

Sugar Island – Take the Sugar Island ferry and investigate the Bailey-Lagerstrom Nature Preserve for birds and plants. Wet environment. Rubber boots and insect repellent are highly recommended. 20 miles one way. Bring lunch.

Whitefish Island Bird Walk – Come out for an evening of bird watching along the trails and shoreline of the St. Mary’s River. We’ll swing by the court house to check for a chimney swift fly-by.

Clark Lake Paddle – Whine and dine the mosquitoes in search of plants on the bog. There’s a half mile portage to the lake from your car, but it’s worth the effort. Bring a lunch and fly dope.

Nature Conservancy at Hay Marsh – We’ll head for St. Joe’s Island where we will inspect the property near Hay Marsh owed by the Nature Conservancy of Canada. We’ll look for early spring plants, orchids and other marsh loving wildlife on that property. Bring lunch, rubber boots, fly dope.

Pictured Rocks, Mosquito Falls and Mosquito Beach Trail – Join Bob for an early start for some trail walking in this beautiful national park. Bring lunch, water and a camera. The park is approximately 1.5 hours from the Soo.

Munuscong River State Forest – Join Carl for birding by canoe / kayak at Munuscong River State Forest flooding area, east of Pickford, Mi. 25 miles one way. Target species: least bittern, Le Conte’s sparrow, sedge wren, Wilson’s snipe, Brewer’s blackbird and black tern. If canoeing conditions are untenable, we can hike the dikes. Bring rubber boots just in case. Bring a lunch.

East Lake / Atrium Fern Foray - A joint venture with the Hiawatha Shore-to-Shore Chapter of the NCTA. Chuck will lead a botanical outing to examine the several different species of ferns found there as well as other woodland plants. Bring a lunch.

Purple Coneflower Tour – Come out to the Michigan Nature Association Purple Coneflower Plant Preserve. This is the only known area where the coneflower (Echinacea pallida) grows wild in the state and hopefully will be in full bloom at this time. Keep an eye out for a work party notice later in the fall to help save this plant.

Pond Life Investigation – Remember when you were a kid and you loved to dip “stuff” out of a pond and look at the animals crawling around. Let’s go look in some ponds again and see what is there. Come prepared for a pond crawl and wear old clothes and shoes you can get wet. Bring a lunch and a dip net if you have one, but some will be supplied and microscopes will be available.

Sinkholes Pathway Hike – A karst is a limestone region of cone shaped depressions called sink holes, ridges, caverns and underground streams. These karsts, some more than 100 feet deep can be viewed along a 2.4 mile loop called the Sinkholes Pathway. 106 miles/ 171 km one way. Bring lunch. We may visit other areas of interest along the way as well. A full day.

Bat Tracking Demonstration– Come out for an evening session on acoustic and mobile radar bat tracking. Derek is a field biologist with Natural Resources Solutions Incorporated and will be giving a demonstration on bat monitoring as well as some insight into the growing field of environmental monitoring for other species at risk. There will be a hike to the field site yet to be determined. Call Val (705) 253-7044 for last minute details.

Lake Superior Geology – Join Gerry for a geologist’s interpretation of the rocks and minerals of the Pictograph site as well as the Lake Superior shore. Lake Superior National Park is about 100 km north of the Sault. Bring a lunch.

Seney Wildlife Refuge – Drive the 7 mile loop as well as some hiking through the refuge. Bring lunch, water, camera and binoculars. Lots of birds and other wildlife. Seney is approximately 160 km from the Soo. A full day outing.

Stonington Peninsula and Area Tour – Camp at Little Bay de Noc State Forest Campground on the Stonington Peninsula on Lake Michigan east of Escanaba, MI. 170 mi/ 270 km one way. Migrating monarch butterflies and birds at Peninsula Point. Hemlock Cathedral. Possible side trips to remote Seul Choix Lighthouse and to Fayette State park restored iron smelting village and other sites. Details to be discussed
